Finding Hardware Bugs - Computerphile

Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools, which translate human hardware designs into physical chip configurations, often contain silent bugs that compromise circuit integrity. Researchers are now moving beyond traditional testing by using formal verification—mathematical proofs generated via computer-aided languages like Lean—to ensure these tools preserve design logic under all conditions.
Key insight: A place-and-route tool once incorrectly optimized a circuit by removing an inverter, failing to realize the circuit was a dynamic lookup table that would be reconfigured later, effectively breaking the hardware's future functionality.
