The special education category of 'Emotional Disturbance' often isolates vulnerable students into segregated classrooms, paradoxically trapping them in cycles of behavior that hinder academic progress. Rather than providing a path to success, this system frequently exacerbates trauma and limits the long-term prospects of the very students it intends to support.
Key insight: Experts suggest that if the special education system were designed to accurately label the primary experience of many students in these programs, it would be renamed 'PTSD', yet this clinical reality is excluded from the current educational framework.
